Stuffed again
BUMPING and boring in racing's big race. The new chairman of the British Horserac- ing Board is Peter Savill, which was not the result that the Jockey Club intended. The stewards' money was on Sir William Purves, chairman of the HSBC banking group and sometime senior steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, who would certainly have brought the determination and authority that the job needed. He might even know as much as about finance as the winner, who hopes to refinance racing by asking the government for an £80 million tax rebate. Mr Savill himself is based in the Caribbean, where the tax climate is benign, so he understands how important this is. He may have to be careful not to spend too much time in this country at board meetings, or the taxman might think that he lives here. A muddled race. We can only hope that the form will work out. My racing correspon- dent, Captain Threadneedle, who was a late entry, blew heavily on his return and will be better for the outing.
