ENGLISH LIFE IN THE MIDDLE AGES. By L. F. Salzman.

(Oxford University Press. 7s. 6d. net.)—This delightful picture-book, full of well-chosen reproductions from mediaeval manuscripts, may be cordially recommended both to children and to their elders. It is as unlike the old-fashioned text-book as anything could be, but, for all its gaiety, it is a sound and useful piece of work. Mr. Salzman's brief chapters on country life, home life, education, trade, wayfaring and other aspects of his vast theme are attractively written and should interest any reader. It may be noted that many of the illustrations are taken from French and Flemish sources, and that English life was on the whole simpler than these elaborate miniatures would suggest. But this objection need not be pressed. The author's short list of books for advanced reading might be greatly improved.
