Sir: I think you misunderstand the nature of the News

of the World. Of course such papers have always sold sex by disapproving of it. But most of the editors and their underlings share a genuine disapproval of sexual liberty. To be specific, they are rendered anxious by feminism, libertinism and homosexuality. They need no financial inducement to pre- sent women as large-breasted ornaments and real men as psychotic tough guys. I'm also surprised you overlook the issue of class. News of the World decision-makers tend to operate instinctively from their petty bour- geois suburban prejudices — Kelvin McKen- zies without the wit.
