the Jewish Law was so much 'shit', although nowadays the genteel mistranslation uses the word 'garbage'. The break between Jew and Christian became irrevocable. The Jews reinforced their view that their religion, was one of deed rather than creed, that right conduct was the paramount necessity. The Christian placed faith first, declaring such faith available by God's grace and relegated works to second place. With such lively manifestos offered to the Western world it was predictable, as any second-rate politician would know, that the Jews would be worsted and Paul would win hands down. And so it has been.

This brilliant, impertinent, prudish Saint, in my political life, continues to plague me, punishing me for the recalcitrance of my ancestors. When I was struggling to put through Divorce Acts, he was a more formidable opponent than any living MP: and I was certainly uncomfortably aware of his presence when manoeuvring through the House reforming homosexual and family planning Acts. I do not like this most unjewish of Jews. But Michael Grant's scholarship, although it has not reduced my prejudice, has increased my wonderment. Never in history has there been such a superb campaigner and never again, I hope, will such a man emerge.
