SIR, — It is easy, too easy, for Kenneth J. Robinson

to sneer at Mr. Marples's one-way schemes. But, as anyone who regularly drives in London knows, it was necessary to do something immediately to pre- vent the traffic stopping altogether. And in that event the fans of Harold Lloyd would not have been sobered up by the smell, etc., but would have passed out. Certainly, mistakes have been made (Highgate, for instance), but something has been done to ease the problem for the moment. The time taken for comprehensive re-planning of our cities will be measured in years, not months—and in tears of exasperation. Anyone who doubts that should remind himself of the squawks of anger which have arisen at a few one-way schemes.
