It appears to be understood that Lady Mayo will be
created a Peeress in her own right, the late Viceroy not having a seat in the House of Lords. His successor has not yet been named, but it appears to be certain that the Duke of Argyll will not go to India, that Lord Kimberley has been offered and has refused the appoint- ment, and that the chances now rest with Lord Northbrook and Lord Dufferin, either of whom would fill the place adequately, but 'the latter of whom would be the more popular in India. There is talk, moreover, for which we will not vouch, of Lord Monck, who distinguished himself in Canada.
