Pornographer's dilemma
Sir: If only life were as simple as John A. Yates advocates in his letter (3 January). How easily he slots bawdy and pornography into their separate compartments. Could he say where Lock Up Your Daughters stops being bawdy and Oh Calcutta! starts being pornographic? Or are they both just en- tertaining? Or both?
Mr Yates obviously finds that writing that famous four-letter word as xxxx makes his Rugby Jokes bawdy and therefore in- teresting (he says). (Or was it to please W. H. Smith and Sons?) Perhaps we must assume that 'porn' becomes bawdy when treated in a lighthearted manner. Whatever the solution, Mr Yates is treading on thin ice, for as every prospective JP should know, it's all in the mind ...
It would be interesting to hear how Mr Yates discovered that 'nearly a thousand' women have bought his book.
