ASCOT RACES.
The Ascot Heath races have not been so brilliant as usual this year. Wet weather on Tuesday quite damped the opening. Two horses only started for the Queen's Gold Vase (which, by the by, is not gold, but silver.) Mr. Gully's Hermit (Wells), and Mr. Parr's Rataplan. (Flatman). Hermit won by a length and a half. On Wednesday, twenty-two horses started for the Royal Hunt Cup, a piece of plate value 2001.; and it was carried off by Mr. Way's Brocket (A. Day). On Thursday, the presence of the Queen and a great company somewhat enlivened the day, but did little for the weather. The principal race was for the Ascot Cup, value 3001.; for which seven horses started. The win- ner was Lord Londeaborough'a West Australian (A. Day.) The race was most exciting, being won only by a head. Rataplan (Flatman) was the second horse.
During the race for the New Stakes, the ;Queen, in her eagerness to see the race, leaning hastily forward, broke a pane of glass in the Royal Stand; an accident at which her Majesty laughed with the spectators.
The week's sport was brought to a close yesterday, and was marked by a casualty. In the race for the Great Western Stakes, two horses fell into the ditch by the side of the course. One of the riders, Carroll, escaped injury ; but the other, Rogers, was much shaken. For these stakes, Diana and Bennyside Hero made a dead heat ; and subsequently Diana walked over.
