with examples of Italian military successes and bravery. The very effective activities of the resistance groups in northern Italy in opposing the Germans during the last year of the second world war should also be mentioned. These groups did include many men who had been in the Italian army. Their activities have not often been publi- cised. Also, many Italians gave help, and suffered for doing so, to escaped Allied prisoners of war — another example of bravery when supporting a just cause.
