Sir: I think I must be one of many readers

of the SPECTATOR over a long period who are surprised and distressed that you should have printed the article by Simon Raven in your issue of 10 March. I pass over his cheap sneer at 'religion,' and the Church of England in particular—though incident- ally Mr Raven is quite mistaken in suggesting that no Anglicans hold to their faith with enthusiasm! But could anything be more 'poisonous' than the three paragraphs on the subject of 'sex without marriage'? Here is a father definitely encouraging a son of fifteen to have sexual intercourse with a girl. Indeed, the use of the word 'always' suggests tha: this is something which is a perfectly natural diversion to be enjoyed over and over again. Sin is a three-letter word which is unpopular today, but how tragic that any father should approve of his son's indulgence in it!
