Sir: I am a Conservative who is very dissatisfied with
the present party set-up. The principles of the party have become so blurred in a fog of PEST and Bow Group reports as to seem non- existent.
Too many members of the Shadow Cabinet have been, and still are, only too willing to accept as a status quo the position left by an outgoing government, and I feel that a clear statement, maybe on the following lines, would give a sense of purpose to the party rank and file and also remove those very nagging doubts.
1. An end to state control of industry, in- cluding the Post• Office and BBC. Nationalised industries to be handed back to private enter- prise within a stipulated time.
2. Reform the House of Lords on a geo- graphical basis (not population), giving it the full powers of a second chamber. Members to be elected by the single transferable vote system.
3 Utilise to the full the skills and ability of the people by allowing a man to work in the occupation of his choice whether skilled or unskilled. 'Can he do the job?' should be the guide- not whether he is apprentice trained. 4. An end to all rent control; and no more compulsory purchase without full market value.
