Lord Brougham has been very active at the Edinburgh Con-
gress, shaking hands with Prince Alfred, whom he called "as -worthy a prince as ever lived," weeping over Lord Lyndhurst, and complimenting all the speakers. At the closing dinner he defended himself for his vicious attack on America and the Eman- cipation Proclamation by repeating it. Some accurate person has produced very violent expressions of Henry Brougham's, showing that in old days he had no objection to violent emancipation, if it could not be got without violence.
