The National Front
Sir: As one of those who marched at , Lewisham perhaps you will allow me to reply to the letter from Mr Aulesbrook (27 August). In spite of what Mr Aulesbrook may think, the National Front marchers were peaceful and did not seek to provoke violence. Indeed, the sole purpose of the march was to protest against the increasing numbers of 'muggings' in Lewisham which, in our opinion, is the result of two decades of unlimited immigration.
Instead of condemning the NF, Mr Aulesbrook would do well to ponder the plight of those inhabitants of Lewisham, particularly the old, who dare not venture out at night for fear of being attacked and robbed. That such a lamentable state of affairs exists is mainly the responsibility of those politicians and utopian idealists who, for reasons best known to themselves, have forced 'multi-racialism' on us in the mistaken belief that such a policy will work here when it has demonstrably failed elsewhere.
Finally, for Mr Aulesbrook to accuse the NF's leader, John Tyndall, of 'ranting' indicates how blindly prejudiced he must be. Any fair-minded person who compared Mr Tyndall's calm demeanour and reasoned replies on TV with those of the SWP Spokesman who refused to condemn violence against the police, or with Mr Foot's contorted performance on our screens a couple of nights later, will know that whoever is guilty of 'ranting', it is certainly not the leader of the National Front.
