Frivolous fancy
Sir: I wonder why the gifted Jeffrey Bernard has suddenly become a target for cruel attack? He does not set out, does he, to report facts? He doesn't expect us to believe him.
I regard him as a master of frivolous fancy. That he writes most eloquently with his tongue in his cheek (and one suspects that he could do so equally well standing on his head in the Coach and Horses) is surely no excuse for serious-minded readers to hit him so sharply.
