Prophetic work

Sir: The Rev T. Towers (Letters, 11 April) is right to qualify my remarks about the general failure of Christians to recognise the continuity of Islam with Christianity. That failure has been much less marked in the eastern Church than in the western. I made the same point in my book, The Story of Modern Greece: and I think that any his- torian of the Near East would agree, though without acquitting the Orthodox Church altogether of the failure in question.

I should have made it clear in my review of Sir John Glubb's book (28 March) that I was writing primarily of western Christian- ity, and I am grateful for the correction.
