The Colonization of North America. By H. E. Bolton and
T. M. Marshall. (Macmillan. 26s. net.)—Though this is i text-book, it deserves mention and praise because it deals with the colonizing efforts of all European nations in North America from the first voyage of Columbus in 1492 to the recognition of the United States in 1783. The American authors justly remark that the work of Spain, in North America has been gravely under-estimated by most historians, and that the work of France, in Louisiana as well as in Canada, has been imperfectly realized. They give a convenient and readable sketch of the whole subject, with many useful maps and bibliographical notes. The causes of the American revolution are not unfairly summarized, though an English writer would emphasize some points more and others lees.
