Thorneycroft and Powell
Sir: As he contemplates a government spending cut of £5,000 million compared with the £50 million he resigned over twenty years ago, Lord Thorneycroft laments, 'would that we had started years ago' (Standing on principle, 4 December).
These words must bring to one man a certain satisfaction coupled with tremendous sadness. Enoch Powell has fought these twenty years almost singlehanded on the principle of honest money, yet he does not receive a word of acknowledgment from the Conservative Party who seem happy not to shake the party faithful from their belief in his 'madness'. What will happen, I wonder, when they awake from their sleep, and what future regrets from slumbrous Tories lie in store for us.
