SIR, — In case there are people who missed the ori g inal Blunden

versus Lowell correspondence, may I make it clear that in his attack on me last week Mr. Tripp wholly misrepresents what I actually wrote? I merely questioned one or two remarks which Mr. Lucie-Smith made about current English poetry. I neither commented on the election for the new Professor of Poetry for Oxford nor com- mended a candidate, except-to say that Mr. Lucie- - Smith's 'admiration for Lowell is fully justified.'

Mr. Blunden did not write the lines I quoted, nor did I ascribe them to him. Anyone who read my letter and inferred that I thought them worthwhile should rejoin the Queen of Hearts. Finally, on a point of accuracy, according to the weighing machine at the Belsize Boxing Club

I tip the scales as a welterweight.
