Add Irish water

Sir: While I do not quarrel with the heart- felt appreciation of James Knox for Some Experiences of an Irish RM (Books, 21 January) (apart from thinking he might have found a truer emphasis had his name been Yeates), I would like to make it clear that Maria is not a spaniel, but an Irish Water Spaniel, which is quite different.

This ancient breed, which looks like a brown sheep, or an undersized, ringleted bear, is rare, but those who have owned one will recognise in Maria an exact portrait of their individuality, eccentricity and affection, which more than any other breed make them prized and loved.
