-The Government must have observed with relief that the Clydeside
Labour rebels, led by Mr. Maxton, were defeated at the Conference of the Scottish Divisional Independent Labour Party. Mr. Maxton, the chairman of 'the Independent Labour Party, said that in Parlia- ment he - had tried to carry out the mandate which the I.L.P. had given him. -He had never demanded from the Government anything which he did not- think they could give ; yet, in spite of. the I.L.P. Manifesto urging a more - generous programme - on the Government, his army had melted away.- " You shoved me up against the guns," he exclaimed, " and when I looked round there was nobody there I You have got to treat your responsible leaders in a more responsible way." No doubt Mr. Maxton had cause for complaint, but one cannot help feeling that the heaven-sent guerrilla leader does not get into positions where such complaints are necessary or seem plausible.
