Ass-saving Ivan
From Mr Michael A/loorcock Sir: As an Englishman living in the USA, I'd like to answer Mr Herb Greer (Letters,
28 December). While respectfully aware that many young Americans died in the war against Hitler, I did not understand that the purpose of their sacrifice was to 'save our asses', as Mr Greer and so many of his countrymen these days suggest. My understanding was that Hitler declared war on the US and that the US was therefore fighting a defensive war in common with Britain, France and the Soviet Union. Indeed, if numbers of dead are anything to go by, it was Uncle Joe's boys who saved the Allied asses in that conflict, So perhaps:
It's Reds are this And Reds are that, Those horrid Bolsheviks, But it's thanks a lot, dear Ivan, When the rockets start to spit.
