Episcopal explanation
From The Bishop of London Sir: Your article The bishop and the princess' (11 January) suggests that 'I have some explaining to do'.
It may help readers to know that since my appointment as Dean of the Chapels Royal I have not commented on, and have no intention of commenting on royal stories. However, on the specific question of press inquiries regarding the will of Diana, Princess of Wales, these requests have always been handled by Lawrence Graham, solicitors to the estate and their advisers. They have provided the journalist in question with adequate responses which I and my office have discussed with them throughout.
The simple fact, which Lawrence Graham have explained at length, is that matters regarding the letter of wishes were resolved before I became an executor. In a conversation with the journalist in question, Lawrence Graham expressed forcibly the view that I was not involved in the terms under which the letter of wishes was varied, and that the decision to supersede the letter had already been made. When I became an executor, the immediate matter before us was the negotiation of a licence between the estate and the memorial fund, to which I gave my full attention. I can only repeat what I said in court: that I have no recollection of the letter and saw it for the first time in the witness box.
