English Drama of the Restoration and Eighteenth Century. By G.
H. Nettleton. (Macmillan and Co. 6s. 6d. net.)—The author of this learned but rather condensed essay is Assistant- Professor of English in the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. He originally intended to continue the history of English drama from the death of Queen Anne, where Sir A. W. Ward had left it. He soon found, however, that it was necessary to begin his work earlier, and the present volume covers the ground from 1642 to 1780—from the closing of the theatres to Sheridan. He intends to deal with the nineteenth century in another volume. The reader will in general find him a safe guide and a sound critic.
