PAUPERISM IN THE BRADFIELD UNION.
(To ma EDITOR OF THE " SPECTATOR:1
Sin,—Permit me to call your attention to an error in the figures of this Union, quoted in your review of "The English Poor-Law," by Mr. Mackay. The figures given were :—
1871. 1
Outdoor paupers
250 100
Indoor paupers
999 42 Rate in the pound 24id. 51d.
Whereas the correct figures are :-
Outdoor paupers
999 42 Indoor paupers 259 100 Rate in the pound 24141. 5I-d.
My excuse for troubling you is that the reduction of out- door relief is by far the most important feature, and, if judiciously carried out, must always result in a large decrease of indoor paupers, because the majority of paupers are created by out-relief.—I am, Sir, &c.,
CHAIRMAN OF THE BRADFIELD UNION.
