On Friday, April 11th, Archbishop Cieplak, the Roman Catholic Archbishop
who has been imprisoned in Russia for sixteen months by the Soviet authorities, reached Riga, having been unexpectedly released. According to his own statement, which was published in the Daily Mail of Monday, he was kept for the greater part of his im- prisonment in solitary confinement, and for the first few weeks he was under sentence of death. When he was released he was handed a paper announcing his expulsion from Russia, but bearing a visa which enabled him to enter Latvia. He was given neither money nor food. He is now travelling by way of Warsaw to Rome, where he proposes to tell the Pope the story of his sufferings.
