Belgians have in the past not been noted for their collective prowess at chess. Indeed, for many years by far their most prominent player was Grandmaster and world postal chess champion Count Alber- ic O'Kelly de Galway. Not a very Belgian- sounding name! Recently however, there has been an efflorescence of chess interest in the Belgian capital, with two front rank tournaments organised in relatively quick succession — the first truly outstanding Belgian tournaments since the great Ostende series of 1905-1907. The first was sponsored by the insurance group OHRA and was held in December; the second was supported by SWIFT Communications.
