Wrong, and right
From Mr Taki Theodoracopulos Sir: I, too, regret my caricature of Richard Perle as a Bill Clinton cowardly draft-evader (High life, 29 March). Perle did not serve, but certainly contributed to the victory against the Soviet empire. Where I take exception is when Lord Black (Letters, 12 April) gets personal and states that my 'principal exposure to militarism consists of bibulous adoration of Hitler's Wehrmacht'.
Sir John Keegan and Antony Beevor have both written that at the outset of the conflict the French had a larger army and tank force than the Germans, yet found themselves routed by Panzers in a matter of weeks. It is quite absurd of Lord Black to compare a Third World country like Iraq, whose army has been denied arms and equipment for the last 12 years, with the combined forces of the Anglo-French in May 1940. And, as far as 'straying into areas that require more intellectual rigour while I hobnob with eurotrash', Lord Black does not know most of my friends or whom I hobnob with. Could he possibly mean the King of Greece and George Livanos? They're the two friends we have in common.
