The Tragedy of Ida Noble. By W. Clark Russell. (Hutchinson.)
—This is among the best of Mr. Clark Russell's stories. It is skilfully opened, the comic rascality of the Yinkee skipper being artistically contrasted with the tragedy which follows. The tragedy, too, is not of too dismal a kind, while it does not lack effectiveness. The variety of Mr. Clark Russell's plots, the defini- tion of his characters, always standing out clearly, and the in- teresting charm of his scenery, go to make-up a really powerful writer.
