Xmas treats Raymond Keene

This year I revive our Christmas competition. Six positions: some tactical, some strategic. The best three sets of analysis to reach me at The Spectator by 8 January will each receive two bottles of Codorniu Premiere Cuvee Brut.

1) Geller-Euwe, Zurich 1953

Black to move. Is he attacking or being attacked? Please provide analysis to justify your assessment.

2) Euwe-Capablanca, AVRO 1938 White to move. What is the correct plan and how should it be implemented? 3) Janowski-Burn, Cologne 1898 Black to move. Does Black have a defence to White's kingside attack and if so, what is it?

4) Mason-Janowski, Monte Carlo 1902

White is a rook down but the s'tuation looks confused. What is the best play with White to move? 5) Kasparov-Timman, Tilburg 1991

White to play. Does he have a knock-out blow. If so, what is it? 6) Short-Timman, Linares 1992

Black (to play) has sacrificed a pawn. Does he have sufficient compensation and if so, why?

The Spectator's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
