Conquering hero

Susanna Gross

Iwas saddened to learn of the death earlier this month of Raymond Brock. I only met him a few times (through his wife Sally, another renowned player) but always found him likeable and unpretentious. Raymond was one of the heroes of English bridge. His heyday as a player was some years ago, but if you want to gauge just how formidable he was you only have to consider that for eight years from 1982 he was Tony Forrester’s regular partner. Tony, still widely regarded as the finest player in the country, is notoriously demanding in what he expects of his partners, and to have satisfied his standards over such a long time is a tribute that speaks for itself. Together, they won World and European silver medals and two bronze medals at Common Market Championships. In recent years, Raymond won a second reputation as one of the game’s leading administrators.
