Eighty years on
Sir: Three cheers to Simon Raven for high- lighting the dangers of an explosive pop- ulation (21 June). The only long term remedy is compulsory sterilisation after three children.
If it is anti-social to hoard money, pro- perty and other wealth, it surely is time to consider the monopolising of social benefits —like education, housing and medical facili- ties in excess of one's fair share by thought- less breeding, at the cost of denying the same to others—as a social evil comparable to the worst In India the situation can definitely be termed 'desperate,' and needs desperate measures to fight it. Perhaps Britain can show the way by adopting compulsory sterilisation as a social measure of the most humanitarian kind. Under-developed coun- tries are notoriously weak at adopting un- tested methods, but exceptionally quick at following them.
In the meantime one wonders why or- ganisations like Oxfam do not dig deeper than wells and give to family planning.
