ENJOYING SHAKESPEARE
SIR,—May I make a comment on Penelope Hunt'S interesting article on 'Reading Aloud' (Spectator, June 12), When I taught English years ago (1915-26) I always found that both boys and girls, especially girls, enjoyed the Shakespeare lessons and were de- lighted to see a play acted when a Shakespeare com- pany came. Many of them would read on at• home.
Also, though I was not a very precocious or unusual child, I did myself love Shakespeare and on being asked to choose a book for a certain prize when I was aged eleven, I at once chose a couple of those lovely little Temple Shakespeares—old, not new—viz., Mac- beth and Julius Ciesar.—Yours faithfully,
