The Military Balance The extremely useful annual survey put out

by the InStitute fOr Strategic Studies, The Military Balance, is with us again. It is available to anyone who asks from the Institute for 7s: 6d. While little of any significance in the balance itself has changed from last year, I can think of no better year-to-year guide for the layman than this. Here set down, so far as they can be ascertained, are the military resources and expenditures of all the major powers, and many others besides. The comparisons are fascinating, and about the whole compilation I have only one complaint: next year one hopes something will be included , on nuclear potential, not just accomplishment. It would be most valuable in the proliferation debate for the layman to have specific informa- tion on just hoW near various countries are to producing their own nuclear weapons.
