SIR,-Mr. Butterworth is not in a position to state that
I contribute nothing positive to the debates in which the New Left engage, still less is he in a position to condemn. I do not know Mr. Butterworth; Mr. Butterworth does not know me. My letter merely consisted of a comment on a view which I regard as mistaken. That was the extent of its intention. Any- way I should have thought I had made it quite plain
I do not believe that panaceas can be presented in a few sentences or that complex situations can be summed up in a set of slogans.
