A drink problem
Sir: I was intrigued to see A.A. Gill's attempt to write down a conversation in a restaurant in which Harold Pinter took part (Harold pauses, Antonia is silent', 28 September).
Some years ago, while waiting for my guests in a restaurant in Sloane Avenue, I found myself sitting next to Harold Pinter and Antonia Fraser. The dialogue went like this, and has the advantage of not being imaginary: He: Drink?
She: Well . . .
He: Something to drink?
She: White.
He: We could have a bottle of white wine. She: And. mineral water.
He: Or we could have half a bottle of wine and a bottle of mineral water.
She: Or half a bottle of mineral water. He: Or half a bottle of wine and half a bottle of mineral water.
By a process I cannot quite fathom, they ended up with half a bottle of wine and a bottle of mineral water.
