Mr. Monckton Milnes, member for Pontefract, has accepted a Peerage,

which has been repeatedly offered him, under the title of Baron Houghton. Mr. Manes was better known as a man of considerable social weight than as a statesman, but he has been for years an active supporter of Liberal Ministries and a promoter of every project for the diffusion of art and the increase of physical comfort among the people.
