Professor Elton has done much to bring to life the
history of English letters. His critical faculty is not only wide and steady ; it is also vigorous. In the Survey of English Liter- ature, 1730-1780 (Arnold, 32s.) he gives a guide, mainly, to the, less considered writers of the period. It is based on knowledge and appreciation, and will certainly find a place on every student's shelf.
