The coroner's jury which investigated the case of the Ilrelsh
Fasting Girl brought in a verdict of manslaughter against the father, apparently provoked by a long statement of his which sug- gested to them that he was a consenting party to a fraud ending in death. The whole of the facts will now be rigorously sifted, but we are bound to add that our own opinion, that the doctors had a right to watch a case of the kind, an opinion to which, know- ing that human beings have fasted fifty-four days, we still adhere, is evidently not that of the profession. They consider that their business is to keep people alive, and that the father should have been compelled to ,exhibit the proper remedies, namely, brandy and beef-tea, if needful by a magistrate's order.
