THE ULTIMATUM
SIR,—In the notorious leader published in The Times in August, 1956, headed 'Escaper's Club' (which casti- gated all opponents of Eden's strong line over SII4 as spineless and irresponsible), the following ict; tences occurred:
Democracy undoubtedly demands vigilance.4
must be sure that the men who are acting for it not degrade its good name. Any irregularities them must be denounced and punished.
In the following paragraph, reference was made the impeachment of Warren Hastings.
Colonel Robert Henriques has now revealed your columns a very shocking irregularity in conduct of one of Her Majesty's Ministers in September of 1956. He alleges that (to quote N't( Erskine Childers) 'an advice of British war intend() and an invitation to another Government to jo HM Government in such war, was passed throa him on the private initiative of a segment of the Ed Cabinet.' Such misconduct on the part of a M inist or Ministers, if it took place, certainly degrades tI good name of democracy, and deserves to be nounced and punished. Surely it would be possib for the Opposition to find out which Cabinet N.lin ster met Colonel Henriques during September, 19 (if any did), and then bring an impeachment again that Minister (or ex-Minister) in order to cstabli the truth or otherwise of Colonel Henriques's storY —Yours faithfully, N
