Waugh memorial
Sir: Just as on any Wednesday morning, 1 was enchanted by Bookbuyer's column (February 8) and took particular interest in his apposite observations on the Booker Prize.
However, my delight in no waY mollified my disappointment at his unfortunate omission from the list of other literary prizes. I was indeed surprised that you did not see fit to include the Auberon Waugh Memorial Prize. This was presented, as you may well be aware, at the Annual General Meeting of the Publishers' Publicity Circle on January 21. The prize is of a variable application, and for 1974 was awarded to the best review of the year — an accolade carried off by l'ar Woodrow Wyatt for his review of The Grain of Wheat by F. Longford, in the, Sunday Times, March 3. I trust you will repent, and will agree with me that this, one of the more worthwhile and prestigious literary prizes, is suffering as much as the Booker Prize from a regrettable dearth of editorial attention.
