A fistful of muck
Sir: I would like you to know of the impact the Spectator Game of Consequences (Answers, p. 20) made on a small town on the Moray Firth.
It brought a sparkle to the dark winter days, stretched the minds and stirred the brains of quite a few of the inhabitants. Our libraries have been harnessed, refer- ence books scrutinised, local ornitholog- ists, botanists, farmers, historians drawn into service.
Gradually the gaps have been plugged, the references identified.
Week by week, admiration has increased for Caroline Moore's erudition, her wit and her cunning.
So we finally got to Clue Nine, question one (14 December) — and a fistful of muck is thrown in our faces. That ended the participation.
May I quote from your 4 January issue? 'Editors today exercise too little control over contributors who go too far. . .
