Open letter to Edward Boyl Sir: In his open letter
to Edward Boyle ( October), Mr Peregrine Worsthorne sa that 'the great success of the Tory party' been its ability to appeal to the social a racial prejudices of its working class s porters without pandering to them. It is o in this way, he explains, that the mem of a 'mass-electorate' can be induced to for measures which are not in their class economic interest. In short, the aim of Tories is to maintain their privileged P lion as 'a governing class', and their me of achieving it is to implant in their d the false belief that they not only sha their prejudices but will enact moo to satisfy them. The fact that in the co of carrying out this deception they actl promote such social evils as the practice racial discrimination does not worry Conservative apologists are seldom candid as Mr Worsthorne, but no doubt truly described the attitudes of at least powerful section of the Tory party. I therefore not surprised that so nice urable a man as Edward Boyle should kr the Vice-Chancellorship of Leeds 'versity to the prospect of a gain becom- a Tory minister.
