Cholmondeley expert
Sir: Charles Moore was naughty to suggest (Another voice, 24 September) that the whole of my article in the Observer, `Scroungers at the Top', was about Lord Cholmondeley. Indeed, the only person who manages to get 'a whole page' out of Lord Cholmondeley is Mr Moore himself.
But Mr Moore's argument allowed him conveniently to ignore my piece's main thrust: that too many privileged or highly- paid people (Lord Cholmondeley excepted, of course) are receiving unjustified pay rises and perks at the taxpayers' expense while most people are forced to tighten their belts.
Perhaps Mr Moore believes that MPs should receive twice-inflation pay rises while signalworkers are offered 2.5 per cent; that water bills should rise to fund pay increases of up to 621 per cent for company chairmen; that 77 military chiefs presiding over huge job cuts should receive £5 million a year in entertainment and housing allowances. Perhaps he also disagrees with those ardent monarchists who say the royal household should be scaled down.
