has no precise meaning; but if he fully grasps the meaning of tonality he should have no difficulty with 'atonality' Again, which of the (three) possible meanings of 'motivation' does he intend?

Incidentally, diatonic and quarter-tone are not techniques but raw materials. Let's get our lan- guage sorted out before we start trying to take music apart!
