Undercover photographer

Sir: I am surprised that Sandra Barwick made no mention of Lewis Carroll in her article (The naked truth', 18 August).

His preoccupation with photographing or sketching naked little girls and his habit of carrying a packet of safety pins for pinning up the petticoats of little girls paddling in the sea would certainly have landed him on the front pages of the tabloids today.

It seems incredible now that he was able to pursue his hobby with the permis- sion of parents. Being a deacon of the Church of England possibly put him above suspicion but I still find it rather sinister that he requested that his 'undraped' pic- tures should be destroyed after his death. None of his photographs of this kind appears to have survived. He doubtless developed and printed his own. Chemists were not in the photo business in his time. S. John Peskett
