.War veterans
Sir: I would be most grateful to any reader who might be able to help me to gather information about the following two American veterans of the first world war for a book I am researching.
(1) Corporal Osborne de Varila, the first member of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe to fire against the German army and the author of the book The First Shot for Liberty (John C. Winston Co., 1918), with particular regard to what be- came of him after the war; and (2) W. W. Waters, who commanded the so-called Bonus Expeditionary Force of unemployed former soldiers in their march on Washington in 1932, when Presi- dent Hoover ordered General Douglas MacArthur to remove the Bonus marchers by force. In 1933, Waters wrote The Story of the Bonus Army.
