Q. I have moved into a smart new office on
the ground floor of a building in Berkeley Square. Unfortunately, the proximity to the street has encouraged a certain friend who works in a nearby office to drop in more frequently, and to linger for longer than I would wish. As an American I am anxious not to offend English sensibilities, so can you suggest to me a tactful 'English' way in which I might discourage this dear friend from overstaying her welcome?
D.K, London, W1 A. Brief an assistant to enter your office and hover with some papers five minutes after your friend has arrived. This will
enable you to drawl, 'Sorry, Jules', or whatever your assistant's name is. 'I'll be all through in five minutes, and then I can give you my full attention.' When your visitor sees Jules hovering again five minutes later she will take her cue to leave. She will do so under the fond impression that she is being sensitive rather than manipulated.
