Roger Ludlow: the Colonial Lawmaker. By John M. Taylor. (G.
P. Putnam's Sons. 6s )—Mr. Taylor brings out various points in New England history which are not always emphasised as they should be. All the founders of the new State were not of the same spirit, nor had the same ideals. As in the Old England the conflict was between monarchy and democracy, so in the New it was between democracy and theocracy. The communicants were to be the governing body. Ludlow's statesmanship and good legal training stood him and his fellow-workers in good stead. Mr. Taylor gives an interesting account of his official and personal ties, and makes an instructive book of it.
