Servant problem
In the latest edition of the civil service magazine, Ti-line, we are told that the mandarins and servants of Whitehall are thoroughly fed up with yet more changes in their circumstances following a further re-shuffle of government departments. Considering the inefficient and self-interested attention ministers of successive governments have had from the civil service—and considering especially the nationally disastrous advice of the Treasury — politicians could well be forgiven for reacting to this latest complaint with exasperation. The civil service exists to serve governments, not to dictate terms of policy or employment; and by far the best thing any government could do with the overblown Whitehall establishment would be severely to reduce its numbers.
