The trial of Dr. Smethurst terminated yesterday in a verdict

of " Guilty " and a sentence of death. The Jury deliberated forty minutes. After he was found guilty he made a long statement, declaring his in- nocence, and mentioning matters in exculpation which the Lord.Chief Baron declared were contradicted by witnesses on oath, and by the written state- inents of Smethunt himself. After sentence had been passed he exclaimed, "I declare that Dr. Julius is my murderer. I declare before God that I am innocent !" Ile is to be hanged at liorsemonger Lane Gaol.
